Rough guide for a straight run: the length divided by 1.83 m, rounded up, and one more post than panels. Corners, slopes and the ground change the real count.
How long is the run?
Pace it out or measure it roughly. You get the number of standard 6 ft panels and posts, and the height you pick goes in your message to John.

Three things decide how a fence stands up
Posts
The posts carry the fence. Set deep and solid, they stop it leaning after a winter of wind.
Line and level
A string line from end to end, so the top runs straight, or steps evenly where the ground slopes.
The ground
Roots, old footings and walls along the line all change how the posts go in. Agree where the line runs with your neighbour before work starts.
Not sure what fence you want?
That is normal. These are good questions to ask John about your fence.
- 8 years in the trade
- Fully insured
- 5-year guarantee on all work
- Which type of fence suits the garden: panels, boards or something else?
- Concrete or timber posts, and which does he recommend?
- How high should it be, front and back?
- What happens to the old fence?
- Is there a gate to fit in the run?
Fencing questions
How high should a garden fence be?
Many back garden fences are about 1.8 m (6 ft) and front ones are lower. Ask John what suits, and check with Cork City Council or Cork County Council if you are unsure what is allowed.
Who decides where the fence goes?
If the fence is on a shared boundary, agree the line with your neighbour before work starts. It saves a lot of trouble later.
Can the old fence be taken down?
An old fence has to come down before a new one goes up. Ask John whether he takes it down and away, and mention it when you ask for a price.
How long does a fence take?
It depends on the length, the ground and the access. Ask John for a time frame.
How much does fencing cost?
It depends on the length, the height, the type of fence and the ground. See what sets the price of a fence, or send John the length and a photo.
Send John your fence.
